Overview

Blood Moon brings Terraria's iconic Blood Moon event to Minecraft. When a Blood Moon rises, the night sky turns crimson red and hostile mobs become significantly more dangerous and numerous.

Blood Moons occur randomly — each night has a configurable chance (default 11%) to become a Blood Moon. When one begins, you'll see a message in chat and the sky will shift to an ominous red hue.

Warning

During a Blood Moon, zombies can break through wooden doors! Consider upgrading to iron doors or building defensive structures.

Mechanics

Spawn Rate Increase

During a Blood Moon, hostile mob spawn rates are multiplied by a configurable factor (default 2x). Mobs will also spawn closer to players and in larger groups.

Stronger Enemies

All hostile mobs receive buffs during Blood Moons:

  • +50% Health — Mobs take more hits to kill
  • +25% Damage — Mobs hit harder
  • +10% Speed — Mobs move faster

Door Breaking

Zombies gain the ability to break wooden doors during Blood Moons, similar to Terraria. This works on all wooden door variants. Iron doors remain safe.

Visual Effects

  • Red-tinted sky and moon
  • Crimson fog overlay
  • Eerie ambient sounds
  • Red particle effects around hostile mobs

Exclusive Loot

Certain items only drop during Blood Moons. These drops are added to the normal loot tables, so you still get regular drops too.

Item Drops From Drop Rate
Blood Tear Any hostile mob 5%
Crimson Shard Zombies, Skeletons 2%
Moon Pendant Zombie with armor 0.5%
Blood Moon Banner Any hostile mob (after 50 kills) Guaranteed

Tip

Blood Tears can be crafted into Blood Moon Summoning items, allowing you to trigger a Blood Moon at will!
